About

Between 2011 and 2014 I ploughed my way through over 200 films that were rated 5-stars by Empire Magazine, submitting my own review for each.

Some were, indeed, absolute classics, while others were downright incomprehensible pieces of arthouse nonsense. Initially I challenged myself to do it so I was watching at least a film a day, but it turned out to be unmanageable and towards the end of 2012 I slowed down considerably.

After reviewing the film The Idiots, which is a "classic" Lars von Trier film, I realised I wasn't enjoying watching films any more, and I was only suffering through them to scribble down nonsense in proof that I'd sat down in front of a screen for two hours half-heartedly paying attention. 2014 was the end of this blog.

In 2020, with the Covid-19 lockdown, I found myself watching movies with a zest and vigour once again, so I decided to bring this blog back from the ashes. All previous reviews remain for posterity, and will be updated from time-to-time. New reviews will appear on Thursdays and Fridays for the foreseeable future so that you can give it a watch over the weekend and join the conversation! Additional posts will be available for anniversaries of film.

Finally, I'm always looking for recommendations. We live in a world with media at our fingertips, and chances are it'll be on one of those. Failing that I have a collection of over 1,500 films ripped from DVDs and Blu-rays, so if you feel strongly about your recommendation I have no hesitation in buying the film the old fashioned way!
