E is for... Emmett Brown

E is for... Emmett "Doc" Brown
Actor: Christopher Lloyd
Films: Back To The Future (1985), Back To The Future Part II (1989), Back To The Future Part III (1990)

The Character
Dr. Emmett Lathrop "Doc" Brown, Ph.D., is perhaps the greatest scientist the world has ever seen. Aside from managing to popularise an otherwise doomed brand of car, Doc created a time machine just by making it drive at a casual 88mph. This goes some way to explaining the logic behind the German autobahn.

He is also a well travelled man although there is no evidence that he travels very far in distance (and certainly not Libya). He only travels in time. At some point on his travels his hair might have been 'cool', although probably only if he met Einstein (whether that is the world renowned scientist or Doc's faithful companion, I'll leave that up to you).

It is not known where Doc is at present. He was last seen riding a steam locomotive into a time unknown with his wife Clara and sons Jules and Verne... as you do. My guess is he went to visit William Wallace - Great Scott!

The Actor
Christopher Lloyd started his acting career in the theatre before making the switch to the big screen with One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest alongside the likes of Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito. He has consistently played roles under the radar, although undoubtedly his biggest role came in the shape of the eccentric Doc Brown on Back To The Future alongside Michael J. Fox.

Since the hugely successful and critically acclaimed Back To The Future franchise, Lloyd has mostly returned to more minor roles with the notable exception of playing Uncle Fester in The Addams Family (1991).

  1. I liked the first movie best. Wasn't Dr. Brown in the Dennis the Menace movie also?

  2. His appearances in Fringe and Raising Hope recently are a reminder that he remains a vital presence wherever he chooses to appear.

    1. Absolutely. He will never reach the heights of Back To The Future, but he now has the talent to provide his experience to any cast.

  3. Great character played by a great actor, I cannot think of ANYONE who could've played this part quite like Lloyd did. We almost synched our posts, must have been a malfunction in the flux capacitor ;-) Speaking of time travel, I do mention it slightly in my "E" post today on Smurfin' The Web, I hope some of you stop by. Thank you in advance if you do. I really enjoy reading this blog.

    1. I think that my 'F' post would look particularly interesting on your 'E' post. Actually, 'E's captain and my 'F' character would probably make quite a pair.
